Secretary report for March 11 meeting
Meeting was called to order at 8:00 am by Pres. Dick Taylor. Present were Dick Taylor, Bill Collins, Jim Ingersoll, Bob Bartz, Chris Tilton, Ken Imhoof, Sandy Williams, Don Ingram, and Gary Scammon. Two Club members were present: Bruce Lockway and Gary Jones
Secretary report was accepted as is.
Ken Imhoof attended the 4th of July meeting on Mon. 3-10. Not much to report.
Golf advisory board. Dick Taylor reported BVSA has a list of needed improvements, but too many to do all right away. He ask for a volunteer to be on the golf advisory board. Bruce Lockway volunteered.
Dick reported on the BVSA meeting last Fri concerning private golf carts. The pro shop charges non-cart members the cart fee during League and Tournament play even if they ride with a cart owner. There have been discussions that this didn’t seem fair. BVSA decided it was fair. (Secretary comment: Imagine that.)
New business:
Joe Scarantino will put out a newsletter. If you want something in the newsletter, contact Joe, Bill Collins, or Dick Taylor.
Bruce Lockway reported on how League and Tournament handicaps will be calculated. He has developed a program to use the SCGA output. Method follows:
“Bruce Lockway will calculate League and tournament handicaps each week. He will take an individual’s last 20 scores. The handicap will be based on the average of the lowest six (6) scores of the 20.”
Your index will still be on the computer from SCGA for play away from home or in other than league or tournament play. The SCGA index will still be used for Member/Guest since non-members are playing.
Dick Taylor brought up the need for new tents for the Pancake Breakfast. Ken Imhoof will look into this. If anyone knows of good deals on tents let Ken or Dick know.
Jim Ingersoll said that Ted Hammack mentioned the High School had contacted him and ask about the scholarships. Dick will get hold of Ted to see what the question is.
Bob Bartz gave a treasurer’s report under new business because Dick forgot to ask for it earlier.
The report was accepted as is.
Dick and Bob reported that the Men’s Golf Club donated $100 to the Rescue Mission in Bakersfield in Ida Francis’ name.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45.

Minutes for Feb. 12, 2008 Men’s Golf Board meeting
Dick Taylor, Bill Collins, Jim Ingersoll, Bob Bartz, Chris Tilton, Don Ingram, Sandy Williams were the board members present. BVSA board president, Todd Lander, was also present.
Meeting was called to order at 8:20 am by President Dick Taylor.
Motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes of the last meeting, which was the Installation Meeting on Saturday night Jan. 12, 2008. Motion passed.
Committee reports:
Golf advisory- Dick Taylor relayed the Advisory Committee gave a list of needed repairs/improvements to the golf course to the GM, Mike Greer, and IGM. The list included leveling the tee boxes and fixing the drainage problems on some of the fairways.
Pancake breakfast- Dick Taylor reported he went to a 4th of July meeting yesterday, Feb 11. One item from that meeting- Every worker at the Pancake Breakfast must sign a liability release.
New business:
Bill Collins suggested putting out a newsletter instead of using the Eagle for communication to our members. The Ladies Club uses this method with great success. After some discussion, Bill volunteered to put out a newsletter for a few months to see how it is received. The newsletter will be sent via e-mail to the members who have e-mail. The rest may pick up a copy in the pro shop.
Bill Collins was talking to some of our older golfers who are not members anymore. He suggested we have a special tournament for these guys or at least invite them to our social functions. After some discussion, it was decided they should definitely be invited to the social functions. We will look at a format and frequencies for tournaments.
Fund raiser- Discussed a raffle to run for some months to give away a nice prize. After much discussion, it was decided to have everyone investigate what would be a good prize and how much each ticket should be. We’ll decide next meeting.
Motion was made and seconded to hold the drawing on Sun, July 6, 2008, at the Pancake Breakfast. Motion passed.
New members- Have Joe Scarantino send an e-mail to the membership announcing new members.
Pancake breakfast- Bob Bartz and Ken Imhoof will be co-chairmen .
Member/guest tournament- We went through the tasks and assigned responsibility for each one.
Bill Collins announced the SCGA is holding Golf Education meetings on Feb 27 at Woodland Hills, Mar 11 at Ontario, and Mar 18 in San Diego. Our club has one free spot. Others can attend by paying $35.
Meeting Adjourned at 10:20 am.

Up-date on Golf Course
by
Todd Lander
on Sun 28 Oct 2007 08:33 AM PDT
The new irrigation project is about completed. Mike Greer, Golf Superintendant, reports a savings of 40% on the amount of water we have used since it was installled. Not ony are we saving money, but the golf course is really beginning to green up too.
Speaking of what’s new, work on the ditches that run along the golf course is now in progress. The current work is being done mostly through the efforts of community volunteers. The Woman’s golf club help pay for the project by donating $1,000 dollars. The total cost will come in under $5,500 dollars. A small pittance when you consider the last time these two ditches were renovated it cost the Association over $30,000 dollars each. For those of you not familiar with our Golf Course’s infamous ditches, these have basically been traps for debris and stale water. We all know those mosquitoes love stale water!
The lion share of the work on the ditches (over five days) is being done by local residents, Marty Mooney, who is heading up the project, along with Bob Nessa, Jeff Thomas, Chris Tilton, Grif Griffin and too many more to regrettably list here. The first day we had over thirteen volunteers, helping to break up concrete and haul it away. We used muscles we hadn’t used in a long time and were sore several days afterwards. Please take the time to thank all the volunteers for their efforts. You can expect to see more activity on additional ditches as time goes on and monies come available next year in the reserve fund.
As always, I'm here to answere your concerns,
Todd Lander, President, BVSA

correction to treasurer's report of Oct 8
by
Jim
on Tue 09 Oct 2007 06:58 AM PDT
For those of you who were astute enough to notice the Oct balance was the same as Sep balance. If you add 1000 and subtract 32.50 the new balance is $11947.94. Sorry about that. I was trying to do the report with a 103 temperature. It probably didn't make any difference but I couldn't use the wind as an excuse.

IGM takes over golf maintenance for Oak Tree
by
Todd Lander
on Mon 20 Aug 2007 02:34 PM PDT
The Board recently voted to employ a national company, International Golf Maintenance (IGM) to take over the maintenance of the golf course. The savings to our association is about $100,000 dollars a year for the next three years (current term of contract). An important component of the contract provides for the continued employment of our present golf maintenance staff at their current levels of pay and benefits. For Mike Greer and the rest of his crew it will mostly mean new uniforms, a different name on their pay checks and an organization with nearly unlimited experience and resources to assist them in providing us with a more attractive golf course.
For the past eight years IGM has maintained our sister association’s twenty-seven hole course at Silver Lakes. IGM provides service for forty-four golf courses across the United States. Along with the experience of their 44 certified superintendents at those golf courses, we also gain access to lower prices from all their national vendors.
The Reginal Manager for the Western states of IGM will be working closely with our Golf Advisary Committee by attending their monthly meetings and having the membership complete monthly evaluation of the golf course. If the results do not add up to a par score he will go to the superintendent and have him develope a plan to correct the situation.
I am always available if you have further questions.
Have a good one,
Todd Lander, President, BVSA

Presidents Message
by
Gil Crook
on Tue 17 Jul 2007 09:32 AM PDT
Gentlemen:
Member/Guest Tournament:
By now you should all know that the OTMGC Board has voted to cancell the 2007 Member/Guest Tournament. This was a difficult decision but one that was determined to be in the best interests of all concerned. Joe has recently e-mailed most member to explain the reasoning so I do not need to duplicate that effort.
A number of our membership had put in significant time and effort in preparation for the M/G. That includes, but is not necessarily limited to, all members of the board of directors, John Mihelich, Gene Thurman, Bruce Lockway, Duane Gore, and Gary Morton. We thank them for their time, energy, and willingness to put themselves forward in behalf of you Club.
Fund Raiser:
We will soon have flyers posted around to emphasize the two events which will be held on the M/G dates. Guests will be welcome to participate but must have an established handicap. There will be a skins game that Friday and a Pinehurst on Saturday.
If you observed the Treasurer's report you will note that we had a successful two day fund raiser, in the form of our annual pancake breakfast, on the 4th of July weekend. We again want to thank Dick Taylor and Jim Ingersol for doing an excellent job. We again had great support from volunteers of both the Men's and Women's Golf Clubs. This event could not beheld without such support.
Projects:
We are behind schedule with the develaopment of the "short game practice area" located south of the driving range. This is in part due to weather but also because the weed killing spray has not been applied. Most of you may know that Mike Greer was in a serious auto accident with injuries. The result, as it effects our project, was that the doctors restricted him from operating the machinry required for spraying and he is the only person licensed to use that equipment. However, Mike is now arranging to have the area sprayed without use of the motorized equipment. About ten days after the spray is applied we will begin completing the grading work. We now have access to an adequate amount of dirt to allow contouring the area for water flow control and diversity in "lies" from which to practice hitting.
We express our appreciation to Bob Nessa for bringing his equipment on site and mowing the area better than a month ago.
Hope to see you on the course.

Gil Crook
